The third installment of Lana Harper’s Witches of Thistle Grove series is by far my favorite. This is almost more of a coming of age/ finding yourself story than it is a romance, although the romance aspect is great.A year after having her fiancée leave her, Nina Blackmoore is feeling lost in the world. She hasn’t felt herself or worthy in a while, so as a kick in the pants, her best friend tells her to go on a date with someone the complete opposite of herself, something that will be low on the scary scale. Although she finds non-binary bar owner Morty attractive, the two could not seem more different and their date implodes almost immediately. BUT! But! The next morning, Morty (a norm or) wakes up with witchy powers and Nina is bound to them as well as experiencing an insane uptick in her own powers. She’ll have to help Morty navigate the witchy world and figure out what is going on with herself without displeasing her emotionally abusive mother.Again, this seemed more like a book about Nina finding herself in her family / the world after her ex fiancée said some particularly horrible things about her, but I loved it because of that. Also, so happy to see Harper once again fill the pages with LGBT characters that exist as full characters. BUT LANA I NEED TO KNOW - we’re getting a second chance romance for Garett and Linden, RIGHT?!Anyway, if you love witchy romances and find oneself, check this one from Harper! I will never tire of the magical, queer, and idyllic world that Harper has created.I’ve been curious about this installment of the series since reading the synopsis; as the extremely powerful Blackmoore family is disliked by the other founding families of Thistle Grove.This book follows Nineve Blackmoore and Morty Gutierrez as they find themselves on an awkward first date after Nina is encouraged to swipe right for a night of fun by her best friend. The sparks are instant until Morty discovers that Nina is the lawyer who has been trying to buy his family’s bar, The Shamrock Cauldron.Things become even more complicated when Nina’s magic surges causing some interesting side effects. While Nina and Morty work together to try and undo the mess, they realize they might have a lot more in common than they thought.Nina’s character was full of dichotomies: she is practical but has expensive taste; she is serious but loves Sci- Fi movies; she is a minimalist but adores all things kitschy. The layers of her character surprised me in the best way. I really enjoyed Morty’s character as well. Morty identifies as nonbinary; they are unapologetic about themselves, loyal and come from the sweetest, loving family. Like literally sob. That’s how much and how deeply I connected with the main characters, Nina and Morty.“Back in a Spell” has been my favorite The Witches of Thistle Grove book so far and that really caught me by surprise because I hated no founding family more than I hated the Blackmoores, I swear. Yet Nina truly stole my heart. And then bring in Morty, a normie we already learned to love in the other books, and I fell in love with his humor and true admiration for all things magic. I think their match was meant to be, beyond them being bonded by a goddess.I would highly recommend this series as a whole, but I would like to remind everyone that these books, although part of a series, still work pretty well as standalones. Lana Harper makes sure to give you the context and background in every single story she’s told, and it’s been truly awe-inspiring.
