This book is not only practical, but inspiring! I started it the night before I had to drive four hours to a three day sales conference. I had to give a presentation, and I had picked my topic, but thinking about that book suddenly gave me a far better topic. Using an ‘upfront contract’ (our term for it) at the start that thanks, appreciates, says how long you’ll be, what the listeners can expect to learn and crucially, that they then will have an informed choice, they will be empowered to decide. The information in the book about the reptilian brain and limbic system needing to process the presenter first suddenly coelesced into a powerful realisation that the reason we do a verbal ‘upfront contract’ is because at the start of a speech, presentation, or even a meeting, we are addressing the reptilian brain! It’s checking us out. Concerns are modern versions of survival and threat assessment - ‘do I like this person, are they a threat, or boring, how long will this take, look at their hair, shoes etc etc’. The autonomic assessment is always the first thing to measure you, so we reassure, give it answers, get permission for the time and reassure them of their right to decide. Once you’re done, the limbic system would have done its thing too, and now they are ready to listen!I got an ovation for my newly concocted -on -the -drive presentation, by giving them an upfront contract; then explaining why, and what I had learned. Not only does the author address fears, he goes all-in with a ton of great advice on how to prepare, how to deliver, body language and voice projection. I also read his books on body language and how to talk to anybody and I keep them close at hand. You can tell he has a lifetime of experience. Highly recommend all three of those books. It's very thorough and that walks you through a step-by-step approach to prepare and deliver a speech or presentation with confidence. One concept that would be stuck with me is the way I control my "state" and my "nerves". The SWISH pattern of positive thinking is worth noting.
