Before I even finished reading this book, I had already recommended it to a girlfriend–it’s a great book for single women (or just women in general, of course) who enjoy traveling, struggle with dating, have good friends, and enjoy food and wine (this is me!). It seems like Austen Keller is living her dream life–she and her husband live in Paris, she has great friends, and she has a fun glamorous job. But, when she realizes her husband isn’t nearly as happy as she is, she soon finds herself living as a divorcee in Paris. You’d think dating in the City of Love would be easy, but Austen soon finds out it isn’t quite what she had hoped. She has to remember what it’s like to date–this time in a new country with some major cultural differences and she starts a blog about her #parisdatingdisasters (there are some doozies!). Sometimes the story seems a little over the top, but I also (unfortunately) very much identify with some of Austen’s experiences–a lot of her feelings and turmoil are very real. Hopefully it isn’t too much of a spoiler, but there is a happy ending–and it’s not the one I thought it was going to be. Having lived in Paris for a few years it was so fun to revisit some familiar places and lots of new ones I’ll have to go back and visit. But more than that – OMG – the stories, situations and characters were such a blast. I love that Austen truly embodies the spirit of a warrior women – bringing strength in the face of heartbreak, unafraid to pick herself up from a stumble, ready to see the humor in the situations she finds herself in, and - with amazing friends - forges a new future for herself. Some of the chapters literally made me laugh out loud, looking around to see who I could recount the cringe-inducing passage to. I loved the way the main character, Austen, viewed the world- even after all that she’s been through in her middle years of adulthood. The way this was written lends itself to vivid visuals and characters that jump off the page in to your living room. I couldn’t put it down as I couldn’t wait to see how Austen picked herself up from one after the other dating disaster to live and love another day. I finished it in the span of 48 hours! Now I’m just waiting for Netflix to pick this up to create the next big series hit! I can't lie; there were many of these vignettes that had me laughing out loud and getting looks from people around me!Austen has a pretty jetsetter job so the story ventures to many countries around the world. I definitely didn't see the ending coming and her love life has many twists and turns.I think this is the perfect book club recommendation - I can easily imagine discussing it together with friends (yes, there WILL be wine!) and sharing our own dating war stories.Can't wait to read her next book!
